AUCKLAND ISLANDS PARTY RETURNS
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, January 21. A 15-man expedition from the Auckland Islands arrived in Dunedin today aboard the weather picket ship, the U.SS. Durant, after almost a month's work. A feature of the expedition was the new information collected on the natural history of the islands.
The leader of the party of scientists was Dr. R. A. Falla, director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington. Dr. Falla continued his study of sea birds on the islands, which he began in World War n. He was then a member of the coast watching patrol, which was based on the Auckland Islands.
Dr. E. J. Godley, of the Botany Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, said the expedition had achieved what it had set out to do—make a study and collect specimens of the natural aspects of the islands. Various scientific studies on the islands included, see birds, off-shore fauna, insects, inter-tidal ecology, terrestrial invertebrates, lichens, high altitude vegetation and the history of volcanic activity on the island.
