NEW CASINGS SHED

First Rims Today

The first experimental run will be made today in a new casings shed which has been erected at the Smithfield works of tiie New Zealand Refrigerating Company near Timaru. The cost was £ 100,000, including building and plant The construction

of the new shed began about a year ago.

Until now runners from the works have been processed at the company’s other casings plants at Burnside, Islington, and Wanganui. The general manager of the company, Mr W. M. Cleland, said in Christchurch last evening that the new shed would incorporate most of the modern techniques in the processing of casings. The plant would have an output to cope with the current kill, with scope for expansion. For his company, said Mr Cleland, the new shed would mark the introduction of machine processing of casings as opposed to the old method of hand scraping.

Overseas visitors interested in casings had praised the new installation, said Mr Cleland. Casings were quite a substantial earner of overseas income for New Zealand and it was important tt .t they should be made as acceptable as possible to overseas users.

Provision has been made for the housing of all stores associated with the production of casings and the new building, which occupies a prominent site at the works, also incorporates a modern amenities block for employees.
