The third Hay brother, P Hay. made up a good deal of ;ee^± y in the 1451 length of • 100 yards breaststroke race to beat J. Hale (Riccarton) and D- Stuart (Papanui). Hay was eight yards behind the leaders at half-way. A slightly built newcomer from the Beckenham club. G. P rove< i he was the possessor of a strong finishing burst in winning the 440 yards freestyle. He produced another effective late spnnt to gain second place in a 220 yards race. Among girl competitors to •how good form were Miss P. Whitta (Riccarton) breaststroke. and Misses B Poulsen < Spreydon j and J. Clark •Elmwood), backstroke.

Junior boy freestyle swimmers were present in large numbers but Miss J. Reid (Elmwood) made perhaps the biggest impression when she finished only two feet behind D. Mears < Spreydon), a member of the Canterbury training squad in a 220 yards event.
