ATHLETICS Technical Retains Boot Shield In Close Match

Many exciting finishes and a close points contest made the Pat Boot memorial shield athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday one of the brightest since the series began in 1947. With only the results of the last few events to come, one point separated the two top teams, Technical and Toch H. They were strong events for Technical, which took its total to 59 points, seven clear of Toch H, for its thirteenth win—the last seven having been successive.

Individual performances were relegated to the background, for the meeting emphasises relays and teams competition for the field events.

One new Canterbury record was set, however. The steadily improving High School Old Boys’ field events exponent. T. Freeman, threw the discus 156 ft Ilin, adding more than four feet to the record he made two weeks ago, which in turn was four feet better than his record of 148 ft lin from last season. Added distinction was given the meeting by three Canterbury members of the Empire Games team making their first inter-club appearance at Rug_by Park since their return from Perth. Mrs V. I. Young narrowly

missed in an attempt on her own provincial discus throw record of 170 ft 6jin. with a heave of 168 ft lOjin. Although now concentrating on the longer events. Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain still had too much speed for her rivals in the 100 yards scratch, which she won by a narrow margin from Miss L. HurreH. Mrs Young, Miss Chamberlain, and the third Canterbury woman member of the Games team. Miss L. Curtis, also made their contribution to successful efforts for the Technical club. B. Smith Impressive The individual winner, B. Smith, made one of his most impressive runs in the mile teams’ race won by his club, Technical. Smith has run better times than his 4min 17.9 sec on Saturday, but he displayed more audacity than usual by making his break from near the 330-yard mark, much further out than usual for him.
