NEWCOMER IN AUST. TEAM
K. Fletcher In Davis Cup (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 16. The 22-year-old Queenslander. K. Fletcher, has won a place in the Australian Davis Cup team for the first time. Yesterday four players were named to defend the trophy in the challenge round against Mexico starting in Brisbane on December-26. The other team members are R. Laver, N. Fraser and R. Emerson. Fletcher secured his place by a series of outstanding wins in Australian tournaments during the current season. The most recent was his 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over his team rival. R. B. Hewitt, in the Victorian championships. Fraser, aged 29. has been a member of the Australian team for the last eight years. Laver, aged 24 and Emerson, aged 26, played in the last three challenge rounds and are ranked as the world’s top two amateurs. Emerson is taking a fourday rest from tennis to recover from torn rib ligaments.
Gate Money At Auckland
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 16. About £550 was taken in gate money when the Mexican Davis Qup lawn tennis team played an Auckland team on Saturday and an unofficial New Zealand test team today. The Mexicans will leave for Christchurch tomorrow morning and will play the leading New Zealanders, L. A. Gerrard and I. S. Crookenden. at Wilding Park tomorrow and on Tuesday. Canterbury has guaranteed the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association £350 for Its share of the tour.
