1000 CHILDREN AT PARTY
Papanui Club’s Venture About 1500 persons, more than 1000 of them children, attended a Christmas party for children given by the Papanui Working Men’s Club yesterday afternoon. The party was held on the club’s property of seven acres and a half in Sawyers Arms road and is to be an annual event. There were 644 children under the age at 10, and 400 children over this age. Parents made the number up to about 1500. Balloons, paper hats, soft drinks and ice-cream were given to the children, and entertainment was provided by a magician, a juggler, and clowns. Afternoon tea was providing for the women: as it was Sunday the bar was closed, and the men had to go without. “They have a fair go during the week." a club member explained. The club has now been in operation about six months and has 700 members.
