£2 Million For Pay Rises For Teachers

AUCKLAND, December 14.
Teachers’ salary changes would cost more than £2 million during the next 12 months, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said at the Selwyn College prize-giving today.
This increase was the result of implementing the Education Commission’s recommendation on qualification allowances, equal pay for women and the ruling rate survey. “We are certain to get more teachers in the future.” said Mr Tennent. "We will get all we want. “Before very many years we will have the standards and numbers in the profession which we think are necessary.” Last year, said Mr Tennent, the training colleges enrolled 350 more students than the previous year, and there appeared to be a similar increase for the coming year. There were 350 more primary teachers in permanent positions now than last year. More than 600 post-primary teachers had come from overseas, said Mr Tennent. and 90 per cent, of them had degrees. The percentage of teachers in post-primary schools was the highest it had been for many years.
