Good drawing performances were recorded at the St. Albans green recently when H. Hairtmont played T. Steel in the open singles. Steel was toe winner. He found his weight early in the game and drew consistantly to the kitty almost all the time. Hairtmont played well but was sometimes tacti'* colly deceived by Steel varying the head length. When it was announced that .there would be no bowling competition at the 1966 Empire Games the idea of a world championship tournament was mooted, said M. K. Boon, the only Canterbury, member of the New Zealand bowling team. It was discussed amongst

the players who thought such a tournament would have advantages over the present situation. Bowlers were from a different age group than other group competitors and were “of the Empire Games but not really in them.” A tournament involving about 100 players would be much easier to run and could be held in smaller countries and cities which would find it difficult to provide facilities for a full Empire meeting. “I feel myself if such a tournament was held in 1966 it might start something which would be continued in future years,” said Boon. The greens at the Empire Games in Perth were somewhat slower than New Zealand greens, said Boon yesterday. Because of the wairmer weaitiher the texture of the grass was coarser and they averaged about 14 seconds. Most of the successful teams used bowls ranging from 5 1-16 to 5 1-8 inches and with a low crown. Those players using smaller bowls were at a disadvantage because they tended to hook at the finish of their run. * The three weeks in Perth were very enjoyable but tiring, said Boon. They did not find the heat unbearable though it was 104 degrees one day and 102 degrees another. The nights were very warm. Boon said the organisation and food were excellent. Everybody in the bowling team put on weight. Being so much older than most of the other competitors the bowlers tended to keep to themselves and live a quiet life. C. Rawlings and L. Harper won an interesting pairs game against L. Martin and P. Gillespie at the St. Albans green recently. Harper got away to an early lead but from the tenth end Gillespie started to close the gap. At the nineteenth the score was 14 all and two singles on the last two ends gave Harper the game, 16-14.

The R.SA. club championships are nearing their final stages. In the singles there are only , five two-lifers left. They * are L McDonald, F. Hoy, A. Archer, N. McNab and C. Spearman. Three pairs teams, N. McNab and A. Archer, S. Howell and M. Sutton, and C. Spearman and D. Keane, still have two lives. There are two two-lifers in the four championship. They are F. Mercer’s team and A. B. Nottingham’s team.
