U.S. ARMY CHANGES
Grouping Of Units
(N.Z PA.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 4. A drastic streamlining of the United States 700,000-man Army. Army Reserve and National Guard was announced today by the Secretary of Defence (Mr Robert McNamara).
Eight infantry divisions will be eliminated along with hundreds of smaller uniu. Mr McNamara said the reorganisation would increase combat readiness and give the Army “far greater strength than we have known in the past.”
Most of the reserves affected will be reformed into streamlined units. These, together with a picked group of six National Guard divisions, will form a top priority force, trained and ready to support the Army’s 16 regular divisions within eight weeks after a call to active duty.
Mr McNamara announced that the reserves, which are under Federal Control, would be cut immediately by four infantry divisions and 393 smaller units. The National Guard would be reduced by four infantry divisions and 338 obsolete units.
The organisation plan is based on a total strength of 700.000 men and the Guard and Reserve-Hm objective which congress has asked the Government to reach.
