Laver, Emerson In Final (N Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY, November 30. Australia's likely Davis Cup doubles pair. R. Laver and R. Emerson, staged a recovery to win a semi-final of the New South Wales tennis championships last night at White City. Laver and Emerson came back strongly to beat J. Newcombe and K. Fletcher. 1-6, 4-6, 6-3. 6-4, 6-3 in a great fiveset match.
Newcombe and Fletcher played brilliantly to take out the first two sets, but then Laver lifted his game and his return of service inspired Emerson to his best. In the other semi-final, F. Stolle and R. Hewitt strengthened their claims for a Davis Cup doubles berth with an easy straight sets win against R. Howe and M. Mulligan. Stolle and Hewitt. playing with perfect understanding, won 6-3 6-2. 6-4
Miss J. Tegart and Miss E. Starkie. of Britain, quickly eliminated Misses M. Smith and R. Ebbern, of Queensland, in a semi-final of the women’s doubles defeating them. 6-2, 6-2. In the other women’s doubles semi-final, the Sydney pair. Misses L. Turner and J. Lehane, conceded only four games in a 6-3 6-1 win over the British star. Miss C. Truman and Miss M. Schacht.
