(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON. Nos-. 30 Nelson was in a strong position at the close of the first day s play in Its Hawke Cup defence against Poverty Bay st Nelson today. After dismissing the challengers for 187 on an easy-paced wicket, Nelaon scored 174 for two wickets at stumps Poverty Bay won the toes, but lost three quick wickets to Nelson’s pace attack. The batsmen were unable to score freely against steady. accurate bowling, although E. Fisher held the innings together with a fine 74 not out. L Reade and G. Low-ana gave Nelson an excellent start with an opening partnership of 149 against bowling that was steady but not vary hostile. Scores:
