No Limit On Sale Of Restricted Drug

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 30. One of two drugs, the sale of which has been banned in Eire for six months except on medical prescription, can be bought over the counter in New Zealand, the Deputy Director-General of Health (Dr. R. G. T. Lewis) said in Wellington last night. The drug, medozine, was placed under temporary restriction by the Irish Health Ministry after reports of “possible hazards to expectant mothers in the use of certain drugs.”

Dr. Lewis said the drug was used to overcome motion sickness and perhaps vomiting in pregnancy.

"There are no restrictions on toe sale of this drug, and we have no knowledge in New Zealand of any reason as yet why there should be restrictions on it,” he said. “But it belongs to a group known as the antihistaminics, which is under surveillance at the moment.

“This group of drugs will be considered by the poisons committee, set up under the Poisons Act, at its next meeting early in the New Year. “As yet, however, we have no knowledge of any side effects or serious effects from toe use of meclozine.”
