Magee’s Feet Are Badly Blistered
(Special Correspondent N.Z.PA.) PERTH, November 28. The. New Zealand marathon star, Barry Magee, failed to pass a medical board today. But he is not yet out of the race, which will start at 7.40 pun. (New Zealand time) tomorrow unless the heat dictates a postponement.
The doctors agreed to defer decision on him until tomorrow morning. Magee's feet are in a poor condition after his race in the six miles on an iron-hard track last week. He has the skin almost completely removed from two toes and the tissue under the ball of one foot badly bruised. In addition, he is still nursing several blisters. He has been receiving medical treatment hourly each day since the race. Magee, who ran third in the Olympic marathon at Rome, was favourite for the Empire title. J. L. Merriman, the Welsh runner, is out of the race after his rejection by the
panel of doctors today. Another Victim Merriman is another victim of the killing six-mile event His blistered feet became infected and he was found to have swellings in the groin when he presented himself for medical examination today. Several other marathon competitors who ran in the six miles have blistered feet and it will be no surprise if some fail to finish the 26-mile course. Time stations will be at 5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles. 20 miles, and 25 miles. Feeding stations will be at 10 miles. 13 miles, 16 miles. 19 miles, 22 miles, and 25 miles.
