Boxing TITLE LOSS RULING
Court Appeal By Pender (NJZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK Nov. 27. The boxer, Paul Pender, of the United States, who was stripped of his piece of the world middle-weigh title by the New York State Athletic Commission, moved in the Supreme Court today to set aside the ruling on the ground it was “arbitrary, capricious and without warrant.”
A hearing was set for December 7, the Associated Press reported. Tiie commission withdrew its recognition from Pender on November 9 for his failure to defend the crown within the six months’ time limit. The threeman body then recognised Nigeria’s Dick Tiger. the World Boxing Association s champion, as its champion, too. Pender, a former marine, said today he never had refused to defend his crown. He had tried to obtain other fights, but through no fault of his own, the efforts failed. Pender has signed for title bouts with Gene Fullmer and Jose Torres, but both fell through because of financial reasons.
Aldridge Wins l .K. Title (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON. November 27. George Aldridge won the vacant British middle-weight title at Manchester last night by knocking out the former champion, John McCormack, in the sixth round. Three left hooks to the body stretched McCormack out for successive counts of six, eight and 10. Aggressive throughout, Aldridge seized on the unexpected opportunity he had gained of winning the title. He was to have boxed the American, Sugar Ray Robinson, last night, but Robinson decided to go home, and the same day the British Boxing Board declared the middle-weight title vacant because Terry Downes refused to defend it against McCormack. Aldridge was then signed up for a championship fight against McCormack.
