Restraint, Enthusiasm At Two “Pop” Shows

A restrained audience greeted the two American “pep’’ singers. Gene Pitney and Bobby Vinton, for their second performance in Christchurch, last evening. Apart from a little female squealing and enthusiastic applause, there was no repetition of the mobbing after the early show. when the audience left their seats and rushed on stage to besiege the stars in their dressing rooms. The show was a bright, well-balanced affair designed to appeal to all ages; and it did. The appearance of the sight, black-haired Pitney weacing the American version of a Christ s College blazer was greeted by a gasp of feminine appreciation. He gave a smooth sophisticated performance which belied hte boyish looks. Hie range

of expression was equalled by his vocal range. Pitney was successful with all age groups, but he had to work hard to get his fans to chant an accompaniment of “dip, dip. do, da. bob. bob” to “Every Breath I Take.” Bobby Vinton started singing while standing upright but usually finaabed close to the floor. He introduced a male fidtarin note— a threepiece stat with the long below-iup Waistcoat worn over his short jacket. “Roses Are Red” aaad “Mack the Knife” were the two songs that were received with the most squeals. The young New Zealand singer, Antoni Wilitatne, was in good form, and the comedy act of Lou and Simon was appreciated. Kim Kreuger had a duel with the band, which she often host.

Crease-Resistant Fabrics.— Fabrics marked “creaseresistant” must be washed frequently in sudsy water to retain the special finish applied to the material. If garments are allowed to become too dirty and require rubbing and hot water they soon lose their resistance to creasing. Then they will require pressing just like any other fabric.
