Mr Walsh To Address State Employees In City

WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. The president of the Federation of Labour (Mr F. P. Walsh) has accepted an invitation to address a stopwork meeting of the combined State services organisations, including members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, in Christchurch on Tuesday. He said today that the meeting would be held in the Civic Theatre. The Federation of Labour is supporting the railwaymen in their fight to prevent the removal from the Railways Act of the clause which at present makes it mandatory on the Railway Tribunal to pass on general wage increases. Mr Walsh said that a meeting of the F.OJL executive with representatives of the
combined State services organisations sent a deputation of five to meet the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) on Monday to discuss the matter. “I am hopeful the Government will reconsider the matter.” he said. The deputation spent an hour and a quarter with the Ministers and he felt it had impressed on them aspects of the matter not previously appreciated by the Government The federation’s support was based on the fact that the Government’s move would affect not only State servants, but “would threaten the general level of wages and salaries" of all wageearners.
