Sportsman’s Notebook STRONG GOLF TEAM TO PLAY WELLINGTON
Six players with experience in Freybetg Rose Bowl matches will form the nucleus of a strong Canterbury golf team to play Wellington at the Hutt links on December 8. Three of the players, R. E. Clements, B. A. Colquhoun and K. D. Foxton, were members of this year’s win-
ning rose bowl team while C. W. Caidwell—who will captain the side—l. B. Cromb end E. H. M. Richards have represented Canterbury on pest occasions. The team is:—
C. W. Caldwell (captain), D. F. Williamson. R. K. Atkinson, R. E. Clements, o. A. Colquhoun, K. D. Foxton, E. H. M. Richards, W. J. McGavock, J. R. Broadhurst, L B. Cromb, C. L. Jacobsen, G. D. Brown. The president of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association (Mr J. P. O’Gorman) will be manager. R. C. Murray, L S. Harvey and A. W. Robinson were anuxig those not available. In spite of the defection of these three the side should give a good account of itself. The 12 player* named have all shown good form at the Canterbury championships and at recent tournaments.
Last year’s Canterbury v. Wellington contest, played at Russley, ended in a dramatic tie, seven games each with four halved. Wellington appeared to have the match won when, in the final singles, L S. Harvey was one down to J. E. Meikle playing the eighteenth hole. But Harvey played the hole in copybook fashion to halve his game and force a tie in the contest * * *
Water Polo Tourney With a New Zealand team to be selected to play Australia later this season, more than usual aignificance will be placed on the triangular water polo tournament among Canterbury, Otago and Weßmgton, aft toe Centennial Pool on Saturday. Wellington, last year's winner, abould again prove hard to beat and Otag<x, in the light at its 10-4 victory agatort Canterbury at Dunedin recently, should provide far greater opposition than It did at the 1961 tournament. On that occasion it rorewtod
26 goals in toe two games and scored only one. * * * Record Entries The Linwood Swimming Club’s pool will be a scene of great activity on Saturday morning when the second primary carnival of the season is held. A total of 284 entries—easily a record for the dub—has been received and keen competition in all strokes is likely. The most popular event is the boys' 50 yards freestyle, the entries for which will necessitate the holding of 22 sections. One of Canterbury’s newer dubs, North Beach, has most entries (48) and the Wharenui. Linwood and Spreydon clubs are also well represented.
