DUTCH LEVY ON LAMB

Investigation By Govt

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. Holland’s imposition of a 3d levy on lamb imports over and above their substantial tariff was another example of the problems in expanding trade and diversifying markets, the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said today. Mr Marshall said the Government was awaiting a reply to official representations made in The Hague by the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in London.

The representations were made to officials of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The recent imposition of the levy was reported by cable from London yesterday. “While New Zealand’s market for lamb in the Netherlands is small. New Zealand is particularly concerned at the imposition of this levy in view of the strenuous efforts made over the last two years by the Government and the Meat Board to promote sales of lamb,” Mr Marshall said.

“For example in the last two or three years New Zealand has participated in the Guest and Host Food Exhibition at The Hague in 1960 and the Amsterdam Household Fair in 1961.”
