HEAT BEAT MRS YOUNG

“Couldn’t Stop Drinking” “The Press" Special Service PERTH, Nov. 25. The stifling heat of 103.7 the hottest November day in Perth for 49 years prevented a Christchurch housewife, Mrs V. I. Young, from breaking the Empire Games shot put record during the opening day of the athletics festival on Saturday. But she is confident she will create a new discus record next Saturday. The present record, held by Mrs S. Allday, of England, who set it with a throw of 150 ft 7Jin at Cardiff in 1958. Mrs Young tossed the shot a disappointing 49ft lljin—2ft 3in better than the run-ner-up, Miss J. Roberts. Mrs Allday was third with 44ft 6in.

“I have been drinking soft drinks all day. I couldn’t help it in this terrible heat,” Mrs Young said. She was worried by the heat but nevertheless was overjoyed to win yet her second Games Gold medal. Her coach, Mr V. Briedis, said Mrs Young could not throw her best under the trying heat conditions but he was still very pleased with her performance.

“After all. she was good enough to win a gold medal,” he said, with a tremend|ous grin.

Mr Briedis said even if the wearying heat remains constant for the rest of the Games he things she will exceed the discus record regardless of the weather.
