First Report In N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. A Greater Yellowlegs, an American bird not previously reported in New Zea'arid, has been at Porirua harbour for the last week. Its’ presence has been reported by the president of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Dr. C. A. Fleming). He said the Greater Yellowlegs bred in North America and normally migrated to South America for the winter. “Apparently the Porirua visitor took the wrong flight line when it left Alaska and came south down the western side of the Pacific.” After a study of records, Dr. Fleming believes it to be the first Greater Yellowlegs to visit any country on the Asiatic side of the Pacific. The bird stands about 12in. It has long yellow legs, spotted grey and white plumage, a white underside and a black beak about 2in long It feeds on marine life. American scientist* in New Zealand have confirmed the birl is a Greater YeHowlegs.
