Wedding Gown Of 1912 Would Pass For Modern
“It would pass for a modern one,” says Mrs A. Hobbs, of Riccarton, describing her 50-
year-old wedding dress, which will be on special display today to mark her golden wed-
ding. Half a century ago in St. Luke’s Church, Manchester street, a young Christchurch footballer and cricketer, Mr Alfred Hobbs, married a young woman dressed in a lace-decorated ivory satin
wedding gown. Designed much in the style of contemporary wedding gowns, Mrs Hobbs's gown featured a train from the waist, seed buttons around the neck, yolk, sleeves and cuffis of chiffon and bodice and sleeves of lace. Her small veil was held together with orange blossom. Since their marriage by the late Rev. Canon W. W Sedgwick, Mr and Mrs Hobbs have both kept up their varied interests. A retired sheet - metal
worker, Mr Hobbs was a member of the Sydenham Football and Cricket Clubs during his youth and has since taken up bowls at the Barrington Bowling Club.
A foundation member of the Spreydon League of Mothers, Mrs Hobbs is also an active member of the Riccarton League of Mothers and of the St James’ Mothers’ Union. She is now a member of the Barrington Croquet Club.
Mrs Hobbs is also a foundation member of the 23-year-old Spreydon branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society arid holds her 20 years’ service badge. Mr and Mrs Hobbs have two children, Mesdames K. W. Hobbs and K. D. Gillespie, of Wellington, and eight grandchildren.
