FURTHER ATTEMPT

Blair To Try In January (N.Z. Press Association). WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. The New Zealand surf champion, R. Blair would go ahead with his plan to make an attempt on Cook Strait, and had chosen January 3 his trainer, Mr J. A. Young, of Wellington, said tonight. Now that the strait had been swum other contenders could reveal their plans, Mr Young said. The same tidal cycle had been chosen lot Blair as had been selected by the Worser Bay dub for Barrie Devenport, but Blair’s handler had doubts about the temperature for the November date and was waiting for the next tide. Blair returned to Christchurch after a mid-winter training course at Wellington.

Mr Young organised W. Penny’s first attempt on the strait.

Of Devenport’s successful swim he said: “He confounded the critics and he confounded me, because he spent 11 hours 12 minutes in Cook Strait. I had considered 6i hours was the limit.” Devenport was a mature man and mature swimmer, and that stood to him, Mr Young said.
