BIG U.S. ROCKET
Flight By Saturn (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyngnt) CAPE CANAVERAL, Nov. 16 The United States today scored its third successful test flight with the giant Saturn moon rocket.
Only the first stage of the monster rocket, carrying 375 tons of liquid fuel, was fired The flight lasted five minutes. The rocket in its later development is intended to take astronauts to the moon.
The giant rocket, developing 1300,0001 b of thrustequal to 30,000,000 horsepower —reached an altitude of 104 miles.
A radio signal from the ground then set off dynamite charges to explode the rocket. This belched 23,000 gallons of water, into the frigid upper atmosphere to create a huge cloud of ice particles. The water, weighing 95 tons, simulated weight of upper stages to be carried on future Sa turns.
