WORKING MEN’S CLUB
Tenders Called For Building Tenders have been called for the first stage of the Spreydcn-Hbon Hay Working Men’s Club rooms in Tankerville road. Covering 7000 sq. ft the building will have a lounge of 72ft by 3flft with a bar. An application for a charter to sell liquor was favourably received by the Licensing Commission last year and the charter is expected to be presented on the opening day, which is planned about July next year.
A library, committee room, billiards room, canteen, and store room, and convenience rooms will comprise the remainder of the hall, which is to be a single-storey structure of concrete block with an iron roof. Finance for the project is being provided by mortgage debentures. For some months the dub has made house-to-house canvasses in Spreydon, Hoon Hay and Halswell selling £5 debentures offering 6 per cent, interest on a 10-year term. A weekly raffle has also been run by the club for more than a year. The section in Tankerville road is of four acres and is owned freehold by the dub. Much of this has been prepared during the winter as a car park. The dub, which has at present 600 members, is limited to 800 members. A second stage planned for the hail includes a larger lounge and a large social room, and when these are completed the premises will be licensed for 1200. Inaugurated three years ago the dub has to date been using local hails for its functions.
