TROTTING Derby Place-getters Have Fine Blood-lines

Any doubts about the over-all standard of three-year-old pacers this season were dispelled when the first four placegetters in the New Zealand Derby Stakes at Addington on Saturday broke the previous race record of 3min 11 4-ssec. Not only was the time outstanding, but the performances of all four place-getters were full of merit. Tactile and Vanderford, which finished first and second, had previously proved themselves as grand colts, but just as pleasing were Garcon d’Or and Wendy Dawn, the next two to finish. They, too, look to have great potential.

A feature of the Derby finish ii the feet that the fir* four hones have outstanding pedigrees, all of them belonging to families which have had an important influence on trotting in New Zeeland. With the exception of Wendy Dawn, they trace back to highly - successful foundation mares.

Tactile has the record and breeding to suggest that only bad luck win bring about his defeat in restricted age races during the remainder of this season. After another race or two in New Zealand, he will probably be taken to Australia for rich classic races there in the autumn. As most of the classic events there are run over distances of slightly less than one mile and a half, his two mile assessment in New Zealand will not be affected by any wins. Tactile’s speed and stamina in the Derby showed him to be one of the greatest colts raced in New Zealand. Like most of the others in the field, he seemed to have little in reserve and to be struggling to hold his position with less than half a mile to run However, his great stamina told and he won with a good

deal in hand. After a first quarter in 35sec, the leaders paced the next mile in 2min 3 2-seec, with Tactile making up at least 18 yards on them during this section. Tactile is a brown colt by Hal Tryax, the sire of Cardigan Bay, Blue Prince, King Hal, Student Prince, Highland Stop, Robin Dundee, Auto Tryax and other winners. His dam Tactics won II races and recorded 4min 12 4-ssec for two miles. She was got by Light Brigade from Nell Grattan, by Grattan Loyal from First Water.

Second Start Gereon d’Or was having only his second start for his Wellington owner. Mr R. A. McKenzie, when he made up a lot of ground for third on Saturday His only other start was in the Riccarton Stakes on the first day cd the meeting when he could not handle the going. Even so be showed a lot of speed in patches and finished seventh. He lost ground early on Saturday and was well behind Tactile when the field settled down He was three lengths behind the leading group of five bones to the straight and he fought on in grand style for Me plating.
