AUSTRIAN POLLS
Socialists Lose Seats (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) VIENNA, Nov. 18. The Conservative People’s Party was returned to power in the Austrian General Elections today, with its margin increased. The party won 81 National Assembly seats, while the Socialists gained 76 and the extreme Right-wing Freedom Party eight seats. In the last House the Socialists had 78 seats to the People’s Party's 79.
The Chancellor. Dr. ALfons Gorbach is expected to continue his party’s coalition with the Socialists, the Associated Press said. But the present Cabinet line-up, with Conservatives and Socialists each holding half the Ministries, was expected to undergo changes. About 4.800.000 voters went to the polls. The poll was a set-back for the Communist Party. It had forecast a basic seat in Florisdorf which would have entitled it to further “remainder” seats under Austria’s complex electoral system. But Communist votes fell 6000 short of gaining them a basic seat and Parliamentary representation. The Conservatives and Socialists have ruled Austria as coalition partners since World War H.
