Robinson First In 440 Yards (Special Crspdt. N.ZP.A.) BUNBURY, Nov. 18. The New Zealand performances at the pre-games try-out at Bunbury yesterday were highlighted by the winning double achieved by D. S. Norris in the long jump and in the hop, step and jump. Although the run-ups to both jumping pits were soft after steady rain, Norris got to within small margins of his best performances in the two events. Another highlight was the win of B. C. Robinson in the 440 yards event. Although the race was won in comparatively slow time Robinson looked easily the strongest runner in the field.
Members of the New Zealand contingent also picked up second and third places. K. D. Gibbons was second in the pole vault, and R. D. Tait was third In the discus.
Norris, the only double winner at the meeting, followed his winning long jump of 24ft 3jin with a fine 51ft UJin in the hop. step and jump. He won the long jump by an inch from Jamaica's W.
Clayton. with B. Brooks (Jamaica) third. He Improved with each leap.
Robinson was In good form in the quarter-mile race, and looked as if he would lead in only a moderate field by about 30 yards. He faltered about 50 yards from home, however, and was lucky to keep Jamaica’s M. Spence just behind him. His winning time was 48.7 sec. The Canadian miler, B. Kidd, who had predicted earlier in the week that he would break four minutes for the mile, won the race, but it took him 6.Bsec more than the four minutes to cover the distance.
The possessor of an ugly style, with both arms flailing throughout, Kidd said later he knew’ the magic mark could not be reached when he saw the state of the track. "It was sort of powdery," he said.
