Entries Of High Quality At Waimate A. & P. Show

An unusual and spectacular balancing act, increased entries, warm, sunny weather, and a large crowd of visitors all combined to make the seventy-seventh annual Waimate A. and P. Show, held on Saturday, one of the most successful for some years.

In all sections judges were most impressed with the quality of the entries, the quality of the animals being a reflection of the fine spring weather experienced in the Waimate district this year.

Taken over all there was an increase in the total number of entries from last year In the pony section entries were the highest since 1959 and entries in the light horse class were also up. Hie quality of the entries in both classes was exceptionally high. Although entries in the cattle sections were similar to last year there was a rise in the purebred sheep classes Fat sheep entries were down slightly on last year. Apart from the animal and farm produce section of the show there was a large range of new implements and machinery on display, while in “sideshow alley” the attractions ol tlie Human Cannonball, the Dance of the Seven Veils and the reptile enticed many into the tents and marquees. The show was efficiently controlled by the association’s officials under the president (Mr G. B. Armstrong) and secretary (Mr S Laing). President’s Comment "The show has again been very successful,’’ said Mr Armstrong. "The entries were very good,” and the stock exhibited maintained a very high standard generally. The sheep and house classes provided keen competition. "Our Australian judge said the horses measured up to those of the best country shows in Australia, and he spoke of the high standard of the jumping. We are indebted to Mr Dwyer for coming down from Christchurch to judge at our show; we were very fortunate to have him here.” The pony section was once again extremely well filled. Mr Armstrong said. The ponies were well brought out and well handled. There was quite good oompetition in the majority of the cattle classes. The Kennel Club show again created interest. "We were fortunate in the weather, and I think most of the large attendance enjoyed the show.” Mr Armstrong expressed tire thanks of the association to the judges and officials who had worked hard for the success of the show.
