TALKS ON NEW AWARD
Mr F.P. Walsh To Be Consulted
Discussion on the proceedings for a new freezing workers’ award will be held in Wellington on Thursday between the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr F. P. Walsh) and the secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Association and the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr S. Arnst). The secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Companies Industrial Union of Employers (Mr J. B. Walton) may also be present. The discussion between Mr Walsh and Mr Arnst may lead to a resumption of the Conciliation Council proceedings.
Mr Arnst and Mr F. E. McNulty, a union assesser, who have addressed meetings of union members in the northern district, will travel south on Tuesday and Wednesday to address meetings at the Pareora, Smithfield, and Fairfield works.
Mr Arnst said last evening that the meeting was being held to discuss the new award with the union members and to clarify some of the issues which had held up the Conciliation Council meeting. One of the most important topics discussed had been the claim for increased wages. Meetings at the three freezing works in Christchurch would be called later this month, said Mr Arnst. Earlier meetings had been held at those works, but now that they were fully staffed it was thought necessary to have further meetings.
