ADMIRAL WINS
Good Trial For Derby
Admiral entered calculations for the New Zealand Derby Stakes on Saturday week when he overcame an early break to win the Riccarton Stakes at Addington yesterday. Admiral broke at the start and was back beyond the middle of the field in the middle stages. He showed up wide out and maintained a determined run to the post to catch Flyn. Admiral, which had finished fourth at his only other start from R. Young’s team this season, is a colt by Stormyway from a wellperformed mare in Trixie Milne. He is raced by Mr H. J. Smith, of Christchurch. Siva was first out, but before the mile' poet Landlord had charge. He set a fairly
easy pace, being closely attended by Flyn and Siva. Landlord raced to the straight ahead of Flyn, Garoom d’Or, Siva. Vantago, Tactile, Torana, Vanderford and Admiral. Flyn worked clear about the furlong post. He was hotly challenged over the last 75 yards by Admiral, which finished wide out. Admiral beat Flyn by half a neck, with a length to the taring favourite. Tactile, which was forced three wide much of the way. Vanderford made up ground for fourth a length and a half back, with a similar break to Vantago and a head to Siva, which was followed by Garoon d’Or, with Flak close up, clear of Carina Star.
Carina Star, Maggie Spangler, Flak, Tarana, Forsby and Light Silk gave ground early.
