Rugby TOUR PLANS DISCUSSED

Follow Past Tactics

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 6. The New Zealand Rugby selectors met In Wellington today for preliminary discussion on trials—and trialists—for the tour of England early next season. Though the actual pattern of the discussions of Messrs N. J. McPhail. R. G. Bush and J. G. Finlay could not be indicated today, it appears likely that they will follow the plan of campaign set out by the then selectors before the 1960 tour of South Africa. This included the selection of 73 players who were asked to keep themselves in top physical shape through the off-season. A training programme was supplied and the results were impressive when the trials were held in Wellington at the beginning of the 1960 season. The trials next year are set down for May 8 and 11 in Wellington, and this early stage of the season ’ will give the selectors no real opportunity to see players. The first test against England will be at Auckland on May 25 —one week after the short tour starts in Wellington. The trials will bring four teams on to Athletic Park on Wednesday, May 8, and two on the Saturday. At the end of the season, the New Zealand team leaves for the long tour of the United Kingdom and France.
