LLANMAI’S PROSPECTS GOOD

Riccarton Second Leg Today Llanmai is being widely regarded as a “leg in” at Riccarton today. He is top-weight and is likely to be a dominating favourite for the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the double on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Cup meeting.

Llanmai brilliantly won the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs, and was runner-up in the mile Pearce Handicap at the Wellington Spring meeting last month.

Obviously he has thrived in the meantime, and if he approaches his race today with the zest he showed for some striding work at Riccarton yesterday he will give his backers a great run. He pulls very hard, and by special arrangement he was allowed to work the reverse way over two rounds of an inside grass.

R. J. Skelton, who rides Llanmai today, started the Cup meeting well by riding two winners, Rondabelle and Manana, last Saturday. Tremtham form gives the Woodville-trained Baloo a chance of running into one of the places in the Jockey Club Handicap. He won soundly over seven furlongs on the third day at Trentham, but like Llanmai he is a freSii runner at Riccarton. Those banking on first-day form in the Jockey Club Handicap will probably settle for either Vitamise or Donald Dinnie. Vitamise brilliantly won the Stewards, and Donald Dinnie was a creditable fourth after showing great speed to get to the front early from a wide barrier position. The field for the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of today’s double, is packed with form runners.

Royal News. William David, and Gay Fox are obvious prospects after placed runs Last Saturday, but they will meet horses that have been making steady improvement with recent racing.

Gay Defoe and Studio were the first two home in this race last year, and will meet again today. They are essentially top-of-the-ground gallopers, and their latest runs on rainaffeated tracks did not represent their real ability. N. B. Holland was engaged yesterday to ride Royal News. R. J. Skelton will ride Rhythm Rein, which ran unplaced in the New Zealand Cup. Solid northern support will probably make stipulate favourite for the Canterbury Cup. the weighit-for-age attraction on today’s programme. But the race may spark off greater enthusiasm if Great Sensation comes out on top. The crowds like to see the veterans come back and win, and the 10-year-old Great Sensation will get a hero’s welcome if he wins his second Canterbury Cup. Much will probably depend on how the race is run early. If it is a cracking gallop from the start, it might be the seasoned Stipulate's day. A Stipulate victory would put another notable double into the club’s records. Nightanarch was the last to win the New Zealand and Canterbun- Cups in one year, and it is 32 years since he performed the feat. Fields, with riders, are reviewed below.
