East Coast Fisheries, Ltd., of Gisborne, will begin a 12month experimental survey of prawn-fishing prospects in East Coast waters in a few weeks. The venture, inspired by casual hauls of prawns in the 4(4in mesh nets of the trawler, Sea Harvester, could lead to the establishment of a prawn-fishing industry, with prospects of domestic and overseas markets. The Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) has granted a licence for a fine-mesh net on one boat for prawn fishing. ' r he company must report all findings to the Government Mr W. Allen, managing director of East Coast Fisheries, Ltd., said casual prawn catches by the Sea Harvester indicated that prawns might be caught all along the. East Coast. “It will need a full 12month survey before we know the best months for fishing,” he said, “but we have ordered a fine-mesh net and we expect to get under way in a tew weeks.” The indications were that two types, the king prawn and the smaller school prawn, were to be found on the East Coast.
