WEEK-END TOURNEY
Poor Women’s Entry There are 15 entries in the women’s singles for the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s Labour week-end tournament at Wilding Park, but only two for the women's singles. The organisers of the tournament, the Canterbury selectors (Mr B. R. Crawford and Miss P. Cuddon), have called for more entries from women players. The tournament will be played on the hard courts on Saturday morning and Monday. A few matches would be played on Sunday afternoon of it was found necessary. Crawford, who was ranked sixth In Canterbury at the end of last season, has been seeded first for the men's singles ahead of P. S. Alexander, R. Watson and B. Crofts. Alexander, formerly one of Canterbury’s most promising players, has been living out of Christchurch for several seasons but has had success when he has appeared in town. He beat G. Davidson, ranked fourth, towards the end of last season.
Among the unseeded players is R. J. Goodall, formerly ranked second in Southland to R. Welsh, and now at Canterbury University: C. C. Pollitt. who has impressed in the few tournaments in which he has played since he came to New Zealand from Southern Rhodesia: and some of Canterbury's best juniors, A. R. Brooks, R. McCutcheon. G. G. Ford, 1 Stanton. W. Edgecumbe and J. Brebner. L. Walpole, the University player, who is ranked fifth in the province, has entered for the doubles only. Walpole and Alexander have been seeded second in the men’s doubles to Crofts and T. Harneiss. There are eight pain in the doubles. The, women’s entries are Misses B. Brebner and L. King, both juniors.
