TENNIS Combined Teams Rejected For Top Men’s Event

Two new combined teams which entered in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's senior men's competition this season have not been accepted by the competitions committee for it did not agree with the principle for its main men’s competition. ■ With the combined entries of Opawa-Barrington and St. Albans-Beckenham there were nine entries altogether for the competition which has a limit of eight. Cashmere, United, Woolston. Elmwood University. Edgeware and North Linwood are the seven accepted. Each of the four clubs in the combined teams will be written to saying that one will be able to make up the competition and if more than one wishes to enter an elimination match will be held. Opawa was the other team in the last season's competition. Starts Next Month St. Albans was included in 1959-60 but has been beaten in elimination matches for the last two seasons, and Beckenham and Barrington have been prominent in the senior reserve and winter competitions. The competition will begin on November 3. A limit of six teams was placed on the senior women’s grade this season—there were eight last season—but there have been only five entries. Of last season’s teams University. Femside-Kaiapoi and St. Albans have not entered, leaving Cashmere. Avonside, Fendalton, United and Shirley. Second Grade The second grade men, played under the same conditions as senior reserve, will have the former five teams plus the entries of Shirley, Addington Catholic, Linwood Avenue New Brighton North Linwood and St. Ninians. for the first mixed A grade and three for the first mixed B grade, both limited to eight teams. Of the 11 Walmairi, Redcliffs. and Riocarton Domain have been transferred to the B grade, leaving Elmwood, Woolston. Avonside, Cashmere, University. Barrington, Beckenham and Opawa in the A grade. Fendalton, New Brighton and North Linwood were the three B grade entries. They will have with them the three teams transferred from the A grade, plus Shirley and South Christchurch which have been promoted from the second mixed grade entries to make up the eight. First mixed A grade will begin on November 3, the B grade on October 27. Two Sections The second mixed grade had 15 entries, leaving 13 after the two promotions. These have

been divided into two sections as follows: Section I: Elmwood, Avonside. Addington Catholic, Barrington North Linwood. Riccarton Domain and Edgeware. Section II: Fendalton, New Brighton. Redcliffs, St. Paul’s, South Brighton and Shirley, which was the number two entry, the top team having been promoted. The grade will begin on Saturday. The president’s grade has five entries, the same number as last year but with two changes. St. Albans, Avonside, and Redcliffs have entered again plus New Brighton and Barrington as replacements for Opawa and Sumner which have dropped out. The committee will also go ahead with plans for a Sunday competition among town and country clubs. Entries will be called to close on October 29 for teams of two men and two women to play singles and mixed doubles with matches beginning In November and held at three-weekly intervals.
