PERISHABLE GOODS
Call For Better Transport (NJ:. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct 17, There was a need for a comprehensive national policy for the carriage of low-tem-perature goods, said the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr E. H. Langford) today in giving a decision on an Auckland firm's application for licence extensions. The extensions were granted. The application, he said, should be more than a hint to the Railways Department that the time had arrived for it to carry out a survey of perishable goods and to supply transport There might be engineering difficulties, but these should not prevent the department from making a survey. "I think we need a big shake-up in this country to provide equipment of this kind,” said the Authority. Big quantities of ice-cream were distributed throughout the country, and it appeared that Jew-temperature goods could be sent to rail-heads and put into depots. Mr A. M. A. Hodder, for the Railways Department, agreed that it could not provide refrigerated waggons and said he was not aware of any immediate proposal to provide them.
