SUICIDE IN CELL

A man described as the brains behind last month's O.A.S. attempt to kill President de Gaulle, hanged himself in a Paris gaol yesterday. Police said the man, Henri Niaux, gave the 12 man “killer commando” instructions to assassinate the President. But they did not yet know whether he was present when the gang machinegunned the President’s car in the Paris suburb of PetitClamart on August 22. They said Niaux was seized at Agen, southwestern France, and brought to Paris on Friday night. He hanged himself in his prison cell a few hours later with a rope made from his shirt. Niaux was the eighth of the 12 to be arrested. Three of the four still at large had been positively Identified, said police.
