U.S. FLIGHT TO BEARDMORE

Weather Station Established

A United States Navy skiequipped Hercules landed on the Beardmore glacier, about 364 miles from McMurdo Sound, yesterday and established the first of two auxiliary weather stations. The other is to be at Little Rockford, slightly more than halfway between McMurdo and Byrd station. If the weather is favourable, one of the two Hercules at McMurdo will today attempt the 539mile flight to Little Rockford. Three men will be at each of the two stations, and when their equipment is set up they will send weather information to McMurdo. With this meteorologists at McMurdo can better plan flights to and from the Byrd and South Pole stations. When the second station has been established the two Hercules will return almost immediately to Christchurch.
