Jewellers Polish Up Their Gem Knowledge

WELLINGTON. Aug. 31. Jewels worth £5OOO have been travelling between city safe deposits and the. Victoria University of Wellington every day this week. They have been playing a leading role in what is believed to be the first course conducted for the benefit of Jewellers in New Zealand. Organised by the Wellington branch of the Jewellers’ "Association of New Zealand, the course was designed to Impart more expert knowledge to retailers to enable them to gi-e a better service in the aopraisal and identification of precious stones. Thirty jewellers from all parts of New Zealand attended the course. All types of stones were examined from the rough . forms in which they are found to the shaped gems Steady for setting.

The characteristics were studied and course members were taught to note the difference between real and synthetic gems and between re-' and imitation pearls.

The lecturers included the Associate Professor of Geology at Victoria (Professor J. Bradley) and three fellows of th' Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Messrs J. N. Fcrsey. J. Cameron and W. Barry.
