INTER-ISLAND MATCH

Narrow Victory For South

••The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, August 26. South Island beat North. 36-34, in the final match in the New Zealand women’s basketball championships at Auckland on Saturday. The northern team was more representative than south, whose defence line was from Otago and attack line from Canterbury. Play commenced brightly and North's goal shoot. M. Te Moananui. had scored four goals before J. Dunlop opened the score for South. With R. Faulkner, of Rotorua, playing superbly at centre. North Island presented a nimble combination and took charge for some minutes. But South's turn came when E. Simpson, in goal defence, made some excellent saves and went to a halftime lead of 21-17.

When play resumed. South at'acked strongly and sent the ball through the court, with almost effortless ease. The South's experienced P. Edmonds and L. Muir used J. Martin to advantage and C. McMaster scored from the edge of the circle.

North then provided some sparkling play with R. Faulkner and M. Te Moananui handling and passing well. South established a two-goal lead and although North tried desperately to close the gap, it finally proved beyond their ability.
