RACING Pakuranga Hunt Cup To Prince Sylvan

“The Prttt“ Special Service AUCKLAND, August 26. After they had had a great battle from the last jump. Prince Sylvan won by half a length from County in the £1775 Pakuranga Hunt Cup at Ellerslie yesterday. County had tried to lead for the last two miles or so. Coming to the flat after twice x>n the hill he just led Prince Sylvan. At the last jump they were just about together and Prince Sylvan stayed slightly the better.

A nine-year-old gelding by Bahadurshah from Queen Zora, Prince Sylvan had been successful three starts before in the Maramarua Hunt Cup. Between them and his running yesterday he was unplaced in a middle-dis-tance at Tauranga and over country at Te Awamutu. This time. Prince Sylvan kept close to the pacemaking for two miles and a half, then went on to win by half a length from County. How Much was third, well clear of the 2-2 favourite Johnny Dee. Prince Sylvan was the sixth favourite each way. paying £lO 13s for a win and £3 9s 6d for a place County was at even longer odds, being 10-10, and How Much was 3-5. The closest that Ascotella. the popular fancy ran, was about fifth with a mile to go. With half a mile to run he kept about the same and he finished there. The double, Prince Sylvan and Even Stevens, paid £llO 5s 6d for £l. Even Stevens, which is a candidate for the big spring races in Melbourne, won the second leg, the Jellicoe Handicap, handsomely from a strong field. Even Stevens joined the pacemaking with a couple of furlongs to run and was clearly the winner over the last bit.

At the finish he had t)vo lengths on My Contact which took second just about as clearly from Starboard.

Even Stevens, a handsome five-year-old gelding by Fair’s Fair from Amarco, is trained at Te Rapa by A. McGregor for Mr J. Wattie, of Hastings.

Hunt Cup Running Johnny Dee, Fair Raye and County were the first three from the start in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Day Gold showed up and Hatch, Lord Cristo, and How Much were the next three. When they approached the hill County led by four lengths from Johnny Dee, Day Gold, and Fair Raye which were in fairly close order. Lord Cristo and Prince Sylvan came next, clear of How Much and Ascotella.

County kept clear in tile run to the flat Going to the hill again he was just showing out from Johnny Dee and Prince Sylvan. How Much came next, making ground. Ascotella and Evermore headed the others. When they ran to the flat again Prince Sylvan began to make ground quickly wide out. County held the pace-making at the second-last fence but with little to spare. There was not much .between County and Prince Sylvan at the last jump. Prince Sylvan had a slight edge. The two of them battled hard In the last 100 yards or so and Prince Sylvan won by half a length. How Much was a moderate third, 12 lengths away and about four lengths ahead of Johnny Dee. There was a further gap to Ascotella and another to Hatch and Day Gold. Evermore was next, followed by Fair Raye. Break Away and Regnier.
