Badminton SURPRISE IN S.L TITLES

C. Young Gains Men’s Singles

INVERCARGILL. August 26. A former New Zealand junior champion. C. Young, gained his most important success to date in senior ranks when he decisively beat a former national representative. N. Thompson, in the final of the South Island men’s badminton singles championships on Saturday. Young won the first set, after taking the lead early, but in the second set he started badly and became more unsure of himself, losing it 7-15. However, he regained his touch, and won the third without losing a point, for victory by 15-9, 7-15, 15-0. Other results were:—

Men’s Doubles.—Final: D. Shepherd and Young beat N. and R. Thompson, 15-8, 10-15, 15-10.

Boys’ Singles.—Semi-final: G. Gimblett beat K. Pascoe, 15-6. 15-6, Final. P. Wilkes beat Gimblett, 15-2, 15-10. Junior Girls’ Singles.—Semifinal: Miss J. McMillan beat Miss S. Wilkes. 9-11, 11-5, 11-6; Miss R. Gimblett beat Miss J. Wilkes, 11-1, 11-3. Final: Miss Gimblett beat Miss McMillan, 11-2, 7-11, 11-4.

Junior Boys’ Doubles.—Final: Y. Gimblett and K. Pascoe beat P. Wilkes and J. Seilis. 15-10. 15-13. Junior Girls’ Doubles.—Final: Misses J. and S. Wilkes beat Misses R. Gimblett and A. Gormack. 15-5. 10-15, 15-3.
