THREE TRIES TO HURUNUI

Canterbury Maoris

Beaten

In perfect Rugby conditions. Hurunui maintained its unbeaten record by beating Canterbury Maoris. 11-3. at waikari on Saturday. Ground condition® were soft, but did not prove difficult.

A good size crowd was not treated to the open football expected and was given little to arouse enthusiasm. For the most part, it was a fairly dull affair, plav being marred by errors and scrappy, negative play. The second half produced a few moments of sparkle, but these were few and tar between. The score was a fair indication of the relative merits of the two teams, Hurunui gaining three tries to the Maoris’ one. Few reputations were enhanced, but the Hurunui captain, C. Anderson, at full-back, was in splendid form. Anderson’s game, with good position play, long touch finders, and solid tackling, left little to be desired.

The Hurunui pack was a little tidier all round than the Maoris and gained an over-all edge in possession. Hurunui’s superiority in the backs was in the three-quarters, where R. Logan and C. Drake seized their opportunities. and G. Hughes, at centre, showed penetration. B. Drake scored midway through the first spell after receiving in a passing rush, and Hurunui led 3-0 at half-time. In the second spell. R Logan was rewarded with a good try from some fast following up. The Maoris reduced the Hurunui lead when Ellison made a determined run to the line, where W. Couch was on hand to score. Hurunui returned to the attack and G. Hughes placed a neat kick for B. Drake to score wide out. C. Anderson converted with a well-judged kick.
