Mr Hackett’s Progress

AUCKLAND. August 26

The Deputy-Leader of the Opposition (Mr Hackett), who has been a patient in Auckland Hospital since undergoing a brain operation there on Julv 25. spent the weekend at his home in Grey Lynn. He was allowed home about midday on Saturday and returned to the hospital this evening Mr Hackett's s< n. Dr A H Hackett, a surgeon at Rotorua Hospital, tonight described his father's response to treatment as “magnificent."

"He is doing very well." he said. "but. of course, he is still very weak after a month in bed." Dr. Hackett said he did not know yet when his father was likely to be discharged from hospital. Labour colleagues of Mr Hackett said today that he had spoken of returning to Wellington on September 3 if necessary, to lead the party in Parliament for the final four days before the adjournment ■ Dr Hackett said he doubted whether his father would have recuperated sufficiently physically for that "But." he added, “if he continuehis present progress it iquite likely that he will be r.ble to return to Wellington before the House retimes on October 9"
