Veteran At 27
The West Coast Rugby team which challenges Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield today has, in A. J. Lindbom, a tangible link with the last Coast XV to play for the shield 10 years ago. Lindbom, a front row prop today, was a wing three-quarters when Waikato beat West Coast by 20 points to six in September, 1952. He scored all West Coast’s points with two penalty goals.
Lindbom has covered a long Rugby road in 12 consecutive seasons as a representative footballer. He first appeared for West Coast in 1951 as a 17-year-old full-back without senior grade experience, and today reaches the other extremity by playing in the front row for the first time. In between these appearances he played mainly as a wing until 1959, when he switched to the forwards. A determined runner and good goal-kicker, Lindbom has scored 205 points for West Coast, most of them in his first three years in representative Rugby.
