Magistrate’s Court Charge Of Impersonating Police Officer Admitted

A man who told the leader ; of a group of girl guides on • the inter-island steamer ex- “ press that he was a detective ,' was ccnvictea on a charge of impersonating a police officer , by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Magistrate's i Court yesterday. and remanded in custody until ■ August 31 for sentence. ■ Terence Brian Shannon, • aged 22, a former salesman, ! pleaded guilty to the charge. He was represented by Mr H. ' J. B. Quigley. I The constable on duty near • the inter-island steamer wharf received a complaint ' from a girl guides’ leader at 1 5 p.m. on August 23. said ■ Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary. ' The complainant said a man had told her he had been ordered to take care of them on the steamer express as a ’ group of ■ boys travelling on the ship might misbehave. The complainant thought the accused was a detective and gave him her name and cabin number. On the ship the complainant saw the accused talking to a group of girls so she asked him for some identification. The accused told her she must have been reading too many American books and ignored the question Later the complainant found

■ the accused had written ! down some of the girls' cabin numbers so she reported the matter to a constable on the ! wharf. f When the constable .found the accused on the ship he • was talking to a group of 5 girls aged between 12 and 15 ■ years, said Senior-Sergeant ' Cleary. He was arrested and frankly admitted he was not • a member of the Police ■ Force. He later said he commit- • ted the offence because he had been drinking in a hotel and had heard some youths ' say. there were some girls t on the ship, and it would be t a good trip if they could get 1 some of them to their cabins. ' UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES 1 Allan Stuart Upston. aged 26, 1 a watersider. charged with being i unlawfully on enclosed premises without intent on August 23. 1 was convicted and remanded in 1 custody until August 31. Upston . pleaded guilty. > Senior-Sergeant Cleary said ■ the owner of 24 Stevens street, who rented the property to ’ several girls. watched the premises at 11' p.m. and saw a . figure standing looking into the , lighted sitting room. The 1 figure then moved along the ■ drive to the garage. The complainant got one of the girls • to ring the police and when , the accused came out of the ■ shed he was held until the ■ police arrived. ■ STOLE MILK I Pleading guilty to three

charges of stealing milk in the St. Albans area, a 17-year-old girl, whose name was suppressed (Mr L. G. Holder), was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence within 12 months if called on. Tire total value of the milk stolen was 10s. The offences occurred on June 9 and July 1 and 2, said Senior-Sergeant Cleary. FOUND DRUNK Pleading guilty to a charge of being drunk in Holmwood road at 11.45 p.m. on August 23, George James Mansell, aged 39. was fined £2 having been once convicted of drunkenness within the past six months. REMANDED A man, aged 25. whose name was suppressed, was remanded on bail to August 31 on a charge of assault on August 22. John Elwin Hall, aged 17, was remanded on bail until August 27 on a charge of unlawfully taking a vehicle on August 22. Jofin Anderson, aged 26, a seaman, charged with being absent without leave from the m.v. Gothic on August 23. was remanded on bail until August 29. Gilbert Richard Wilson, Richard David Hills, and Reginald George Richardson were remanded until August 31 on charges of being unlawfully on licensed premises.
