Mail-Boxes

| Sir.—Recently I moved into the Harewood-Burnside area and had difficulty finding a handy post-box. I inquired of a shopkeeper in Kendal avenue, close to Memorial avenue, and was told that he had rung up the Chief Post Office on three occasions concerning the installation cf a mail-box, as the nearest is about a mile away in Grahams road. On the third occasion (the first time he telephoned they insisted there was one already installed there) he was politely told that because of the metal lamp-posts they had to apply to the Waimairi County Council for a permit or such-like. Inquiring at the Waimairi County Council. I was told that no such application had been received from the Post Office. Could the Chief Postmaster please explain through your column what has been done? —Yours, etc., R J. THOM.

August 23. 1962. [The Chief Postmaster (Mr C. J. C. Simpson) said: “A posting box was erected at the corner of Kendall avenue and Burnside crescent before Mr Thom’s letter was received for comment. It does appear, however, that your correspondent was misinformed because the Post Office wrote to the Waimairi Ccunty Council on July 5 asking for permission to erect the box. Approval was received from the council on August 16. Householders in the locality may be interested to know that a posting box will also shortly be erected near the corner of Kendall avenue and Cranbrook street."]
