Kennedy On Space Race

President Kennedy said today the United States was well behind the Soviet Union in space exploration “but I believe that by the end of the decade the United States will be ahead " Asked about the space programme at his press conference today, he said that the United States was well behind the Soviet Union—anyone who said otherwise was misleading the American people—but the United States was carrying out a big space programme and would lead before 1970 The President said that the United States faced a “tremendous job” in building a rocket booster of a size the Soviet Union possessed now
He warned that United States space programmes would require tremendous amounts of money in the future, even though the current space budget was larger than the combined totals of space expenditures in the previous eight years.
