Gold, Ivory Theme In Royal Suite

The suite at the United Service Hotel, which will be used by the King and Queen of Thailand during their visit to Christchurch has been redecorated in a gold and ivory theme. Brocades, mahogany and walnut furniture, and the discrete use of rich reds have combined to give the rooms a look of elegance and grace.

The decor was planned by Mrs L. Gregory, wife of the hotel's manager. Queen Sinkit’s bedroom has a citrus-green carpet featuring a small white pattern, mahogany furniture, and quilted cream damask for the bedspread, drapes, chair and bedhead Her dressing room has been fitted with long mirrors, richly-coloured brocade chairs, and two big racks for her clothes

The Queens favourite spring flowers have been arranged in her bedroom —gold glasshouse freesias. white hyacinths, lemon tulips, pale cream daffodils, phylica, and thryptomene (a small, soft white erica). The reflections of two bowls of these flowers set against wall mirrors gives the illusion of a whole bank. New Zealand Touch

In striking contrast is a New Zealand floral arrangement set in a low trough by members of the New Zealand branch of the Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women's Association.

Spiky and vertical with dark green, red and brown tonings, this includes native flax, bullrushes, small coprosma berries, bronze akeake and lemon matipo berries. rangiora leaf, and royal purple tinted veronica flowers

King Bhumibol's bedroom features gold damask drapes and walnut furniture, and the same carpet as in the Queen's room. Adjoining the two bedrooms is a small, comfortable sitting room, carpeted in deep red. Flowers in this room will include green leucodendrons, red and pale pink carnations, proteas, pink hyacinths and irridiscent bulb inella.

The private dining room has been decorated in dresden blue and ivory, with touches of gold in the elaborate ceiling architraves. The period mahogany furniture includes a dining table to seat eight, armchairs, a sideboard and occasional tables
