Avanti Breaks Records
A Studebaker Avanti, driven by A. Granatelli, has broken 29 national stock car speed records in 12 hours on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. A two-way average of 168.15 miles an hour was recorded over the flying mile, exceeding by 4.48 miles an hour the record set a few days previously by M. Thompson, of California. The 10-mile flying start average was 163.90 miles an hour, which broke Thompson’s record by 11.43 miles an hour. All runs were certified by the United States Auto Club.
